Kings Theatre
The Glasgow King's Theatre is one of Scotland's most historic and significant theatres.
It opened in 1904 as one of the most brilliant designs of the prolific theatre
architect Frank Matcham and has played host to top stars and shows ever since.
It is home to possibly the very best Christmas pantomime to be seen in the United
Kingdom which over the years has featured the Scottish greats including Stanley
Baxter, Jimmy Logan, Rikki Fulton, Jack Milroy, Elaine C Smith and Gerard Kelly.
The King's provides Glasgow's flourishing amateur groups with a high profile
stage and was the location for the opening ceremony of Glasgow's European City
of Culture events in 1990. Above all, it continues to pack in appreciative
audiences performance after performance and throughout the year.
On September 30 2002 Ambassador Theatre Group took on the management of the
King's (Glasgow City Council remains the owner). The theatre continues to present
first class musicals and pantomime alongside a wider range of drama, dance and
comedy.
Citizen's Theatre
One of the leading theatres in Britain, the Glasgow Citizens' Theatre Company
was formed in 1943 by a group of Glasgow Citizens including the playwright
James Bridie, who became the first President, Dr Tom Honeyman, who became the
first Chairman, and the writer Guy McCrone who was the first Managing Director.
They first presented their repertoire in the Athenaeum Theatre but moved to the
Royal Princess's Theatre (originally opened in 1878 and famous for pantomime,
melodrama and the national drama) in the Gorbals in 1945. This building was
later renamed the Citizens' Theatre.
Theatre Royal
The Theatre Royal continues to go from strength to strength presenting not
only its home company, Scottish Opera, but also Scottish Ballet and other
world class arts companies such as the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal
National Theatre. Successive front of house and backstage developments have
ensured the Theatre Royal keeps pace with standards of customer care and
technical facilities.
A further phase of refurbishment involving redecorating
the public areas, replacing seating and carpeting, and, most significantly,
a much-needed extension to the orchestra pit, was completed in the summer of
1997. The Theatre Royal had continued to assure its place as one of Scotland's
principal performing venues.
Tramway
Tramway is one of the leading contemporary visual and performing arts venues
in Europe. Audiences, visitors, artists, performers and producers seek out
Tramway's unique spaces as a place to create and engage, challenge and question.
We invite you to join us and explore the building and its world-encompassing
programme of events.
Tron Theatre Glasgow
The Tron Theatre was established as a theatre club in 1979 (going fully public
in 1989), rising from the ashes of the destroyed Close Theatre, based at the
Citizens Theatre, Glasgow.
Originally based in the Victorian Bar of the Tron whilst the Kirk itself
was transformed into the auditorium, the Tron has become a leading player in
Scottish theatre. Under the Artistic leadership of Michael Boyd (1986 to 1996)
- now Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Tron established
itself as a powerhouse of both new writing and dynamic productions of classic
texts, making full use of available Scottish talent. Leading artists to emerge
from this period include Alan Cumming, Forbes Masson, Peter Mullan, Craig
Ferguson and Siobhan Redmond, as well as musician Craig Armstrong
(Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet and Moulin Rouge). Many of these artists still
continue an association with the Tron.
Glasgow Film Theatre
Glasgow Film Theatre is an art house cinema with three screens. 440 films
screened per year from across the world. Annual festivals include Cosmopolitan
Glasgow World Film Festival (February), Italian Film Festival UK (April),
French Film Festival (Nov), Electric Shadows (Chinese) (Jan), Glasgay (Nov)
